A couples session in the rain at sunset on Lake Ontario

The sun went down behind a wall of rain clouds over Lake Ontario, and Maria and Vlad decided to stay.

If you've seen Maria and Vlad in the park with their pale blue bicycle, this is the other side of them. No bicycle this time — just a summer evening on the banks of Lake Ontario outside Niagara-on-the-Lake, a long blue skirt, a linen shirt, and a lake so big it looks like the sea. We started on the pebble beach and worked our way up onto the bluffs as the sun dropped toward the water.
The sky did something I'll be chasing for years. A storm had been building over the lake all afternoon, and as the sun went down behind it the whole horizon turned the colour of peaches through the cloud — glowing at the edges, heavy and grey on top. Then it started to rain. Not a downpour, just that warm, fine summer rain that hangs in the air and softens everything it touches. I asked if they wanted to call it. Vlad looked at Maria, Maria laughed, and he picked her up instead.
That's the session, really. Two people on the edge of a very big lake, getting quietly soaked and not caring at all. The rain flattened the water and blurred the far shore into nothing, so in half these frames it looks like they're standing at the end of the world. The one I keep coming back to is near the end — Maria's arms around his neck, the lake gone completely still behind them, both of them wet through and in no hurry to go anywhere.

The bluffs of Lake Ontario, Niagara-on-the-Lake
Along the lakeshore outside Niagara-on-the-Lake, low grassy bluffs drop down to quiet pebble beaches, with nothing but open water to the horizon — about an hour and a half from Kitchener-Waterloo. In summer the sun sets out over the lake, so come for the last hour before sunset and plan to walk between the beach, the bluff and the wildflower meadows behind them. Wear shoes you don't mind getting wet, and don't cancel for a forecast of light rain — sometimes it's the best thing that happens to the session.
