Engagement Photography

The ring is new and the planning hasn't started. Let's photograph this part.

Who this is for

For the year you said yes.

You've just got engaged, and suddenly everyone wants to know about the venue, the date and the guest list. This session is the opposite of all that — one hour where the only thing on the agenda is the two of you.

Most couples come to me because they need photographs for something — save-the-dates, the wedding website, the announcement. You'll get all of those. But the reason I love these sessions is that they catch you at a stage that doesn't last long. New ring, no plans yet, still a little giddy about it.

I won't pose you. I'll give you somewhere to walk and something to do, and photograph what happens in between — and a few quiet frames of the ring along the way. It's also the best rehearsal there is for being photographed on the wedding day itself.

Recent work

You only get to be newly engaged once. It's worth an hour of good light.

How it works

From hello to gallery.

1

Say hello

Tell me about the two of you, when you got engaged, and your wedding date if you have one. I'll reply within two days.

2

We plan it together

We pick a place that feels like you — a meadow, a lakeshore, the city — and a start time built around golden hour. I'll help with what to wear, and we'll time it so the gallery is back before your save-the-dates go out.

3

The session

An hour, mostly moving. Prompts rather than poses, a few frames of the ring, and plenty of room for the two of you to forget I'm there.

4

Your gallery

Two to three weeks later, a private gallery of finished images — ready for save-the-dates, the wedding website, and your walls.

Before the wedding

Planning a wedding? Do this early.

Best six to twelve months before the day

If you're planning a wedding, this is worth doing early. You get photographs for the save-the-dates and the website — and, more usefully, an hour of being photographed together before the day when it really counts, so it isn't the first time.

Tell me your date when you write, and we'll fit it in well before the day.

Questions

When should we book our engagement session?
Six to twelve months before the wedding is ideal, so the gallery is back in time for save-the-dates. Golden-hour evenings in late summer and fall go first, so write early if you have a season in mind.
Can we use the photos for save-the-dates and our wedding website?
Yes. Every gallery comes with a full print release, so you can use the images on save-the-dates, invitations, your wedding website and anywhere else you like.
Will you photograph the ring?
Yes — a few detail frames of the ring and your hands are part of every engagement session. Give it a clean the day before; the camera sees everything.
Where should we do it?
Somewhere that feels like the two of you. Open meadows like the ones off the Grand Trunk Trail in Cambridge for something soft and golden, the Lake Ontario shore for something wilder, or downtown Kitchener or Galt for a bit of edge. I'll suggest a few options once I know where you're based.
What should we wear?
Coordinate rather than match — two or three soft colours between you, good fabric, nothing with a logo. Something with movement for one of you, like a long dress or a coat, always helps. It's worth dressing up a little more than you would for an ordinary day. We'll go through it beforehand.
We're not photogenic.
Nobody is, standing still, being told to look natural. That's a directing problem, not a face problem. Give me ten minutes.
Do you shoot weddings?
Not yet — I'm taking on weddings from 2027 and booking a small number. If you're planning one, get in touch anyway and we'll talk.
