If you've tried to find out what a family photographer costs around here, you've probably noticed something odd. Most websites won't tell you. You get a contact form, a "pricing guide available on request," or a prices page with no prices on it.

I think that's backwards. You should be able to work out what a session costs before you write to anyone. So here's what I found when I looked at what photographers around Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge actually publish, what you should expect to be included, and where the hidden costs usually sit.

The short answer

Based on prices published by local photographers in September 2026:

  • Mini sessions (10 to 30 minutes): roughly $150 to $300, plus HST at most studios.
  • Full family sessions (about an hour): roughly $300 to $475, plus HST.
  • Maternity sessions: roughly $250 to $420 on their own, with maternity-and-newborn bundles from about $600 to $800.
  • Studio newborn sessions: often $400 to $750 and up. Parents on local forums put the going rate around $400 to $600.

Those are starting prices. The number that actually matters is what you pay once you have the photos you want, and that can be very different.

What local photographers charge

I checked these on each photographer's own website on September 26, 2026. Prices change often, so treat this as a snapshot, not a quote.

Photographer Session Length Price Images
Emptage Photography Christmas mini (tree farm) 10 min $150 15
SW Photography Fall mini 15 min $225 8
SW Photography Tree farm / holiday mini 15 min $255–265 8
Straight Thru Fall mini 20 min $249 + HST All edited
Parker Photography Family session 1 hr $420 + HST 30–40+
Viktoriia N Mini session 30 min $175 15–20
Viktoriia N The Hour 1 hr $300 30–40
Viktoriia N The Long Session 2 hr $550 60–70

Yes, I've put myself in the table. I'd rather you see where I sit than guess.

Why the sticker price can mislead you

There are two common ways photography is priced, and they lead to very different totals.

1. Everything included. You pay one price and get a set number of finished images, or the whole edited gallery. What you see is what you pay.

2. Session fee, then you buy the photos. The first price covers the photographer's time. Afterwards you look at the gallery and pay per image or per package. This is where a $250 session can become $700.

Neither model is dishonest. But a parent on a local forum described being quoted $500 for a maternity session with only ten digital images, which works out to $50 a photo. In the same thread, about $550 with more than fifty images was called a good deal. Same rough price, five times the photographs.

So when you compare, don't compare session fees. Compare cost per finished image and what you'll have in your hands at the end.

What should be included

For a family session in this area, I'd expect a good photographer to include:

  • Help choosing a location, with an eye on where the light is at your time of day.
  • Help with what to wear. Even a short message exchange makes a big difference.
  • Direction during the session, so you're not standing there wondering what to do with your hands.
  • Hand-edited images, not just a filter run over the whole set.
  • A private online gallery you can download from and share.
  • A print release, so you can print your photos anywhere you like.
  • A clear delivery time. Two to three weeks is common.

If any of these cost extra, that's fine, but you want to know before you book.

Why photographers cost what they cost

This is the question nobody asks out loud. An hour of shooting for $300 sounds like a lot per hour.

But the hour is the smallest part. Around a one-hour session there's the back-and-forth to plan it, scouting the light, the drive, then culling hundreds of frames down to the best thirty or forty, and editing each one. I grade every image by hand, one at a time, the way I'd mix a colour on a palette. For a one-hour session, the editing alone takes me many times longer than the shoot.

There's also the gear, the insurance, the gallery software, the backups, and the years it took to learn to see light properly. You're paying for all of it, spread across the sessions a photographer can realistically do in a year.

How to tell what you'll really pay

Before you book anyone, including me, ask these five questions:

  1. How many finished images do I get? A number or a range, not "a selection."
  2. Are digital files included, or sold separately?
  3. Is tax included in the price?
  4. What's the deposit, and when is the balance due?
  5. When will I get the gallery?

If the answers are clear and match the website, you're in good hands.

## How my pricing works

There are three options, and they're the same for every kind of session: motherhood, family, maternity, couples and engagement.

  • Mini session, $175. Thirty minutes, one location, 15–20 finished images.
  • The Hour, $300. One hour, one location, 30–40 finished images.
  • The Long Session, $550. Two hours, two locations or an outfit change, 60–70 finished images.

Every image is edited by hand and delivered in colour and black and white, in a private gallery with a full print release, usually within two weeks. There's no tax added and nothing to buy afterwards unless you decide you want prints. A deposit holds your date and comes off the total.

That puts me at the lower-middle of the local range. The mini, in particular, gives you more time and more photos than most 15–20 minute minis, for less. You can see the details on my pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

How much do family photos cost in Kitchener-Waterloo? Published prices in 2026 run from about $150 for a short mini session to about $475 for a one-hour family session, before tax. Always check how many images are included.

How much should I pay for maternity photos? Locally, maternity sessions are usually listed between $250 and $420. Bundles with a newborn session run about $600 to $800.

How many photos should a family session include? For an hour, 30 to 40 finished images is a fair expectation. A 15-minute mini typically includes 8 to 15.

Do I tip a family photographer? It isn't expected in Canada. If you loved the photos, a Google review helps a small photographer far more than a tip.

Are mini sessions worth it? For one location and a small family, often yes. I wrote a whole post on whether 30 minutes is enough.
